Default Autocross

Hey there,

Does anybody autocross here?

Most of you know what autocrossing is, but for the ones who dont:

From wikipedia

Autocross is a form of motorsports that emphasizes safe, low-cost competition and active participation. An autocross is a timed competition where drivers navigate one at a time through a temporary course marked by traffic cones, rather than racing on a track with multiple other cars, as in road racing or oval racing. Autocross tends to place more emphasis on car handling and driver skill than on sheer horsepower, and events typically have many classes which allow almost any vehicle, from economy sedans to purpose-built vehicles, to compete. Speeds are slower in absolute terms when compared to other forms of motorsports, usually not exceeding highway speeds, but the activity level (measured in discrete turns per minute) can be higher than even Formula One due to the large number of elements packed into each course. Autocross courses are typically 40 to 70 seconds in length. In addition to being a national-level motorsport in its own right, autocrossing is a good way to learn skills that transfer to road racing, as drivers learn vehicle control and club ethics.
Autocross events are usually held in large paved areas like parking lots or airfields. Typically, new courses are created for each event so drivers must learn a new course each time they compete. Prior to driving, a competitor will walk the course, taking mental notes, and developing a strategy to be refined upon subsequent runs. National organizations such as the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and National Auto Sport Association (NASA) sponsor autocross events throughout the United States, and many areas have independent autocross clubs. Automobile manufacturers and their associated clubs (e.g. the BMW Car Club of America) sometimes hold marque autocross events.

Here's a list of classes and allowed mods:

Lets throw it out there: Whats your guys opinion about the best setup (also cost effective) for sts class considering that your car is your everyday drive and that autocrossing is just a hobby, not an obsession?

They offered Autocross at UNOH when I went there. Alotta people did it... It was really cool to watch, especially a few of the Evo's and (surprisingly) miata's.

I never did it though, personally... Most of the track setups they had were 2nd gear courses, and in the 1.8T's, thats the strongest, most powerful gear.. It would've been one big burnout/tire melting session lol. There was a GLI that did it though and he did alright, but it deff. tore up his sneakers.

In addition to that, I can only imagine what it would've done to my suspension lol. I love the idea of autocross being.. well.. Kinda like road rally, but I just couldn't afford all the stuff I needed for it at the time.

Plus, the AWD cars that were there.. Mainly Evo's, STI's, and Talon's would smoke the FWD's.

yep. if you wanna do it its gotta be 4 fun...

there are a couple of events around here, some friends want me to race on the stock category, but the freaking AWD subbies and evos with 250 + horses leave me no chance.

if i ever do it, it'll be for fun, another cool experience...

SO i went to a cruise in with my brother in law the other night. i meet this old lady, early 60s, maybe late 50s. shes sitting on a grassy area in lawn chair laughing and having a good time. I was confused because the ONLY car near her was a brand new gunmetal GTR35. i looked at it, and my brother in law told me its hers. and she autocrosses with it. I was dumb struck. she looks like she would work at a bakery or something. and her husband had a decked out 02 wrx that he autocrosses too. i was so bewildered. and they autocross in west richland, which is close to where i live. she said "yeah come down to the races, i'll give yall a ride! appearently they have an 07 sti that they "mess around" with too.

Just goes to show, never judge a person by their looks, they might give you a ride in a GTR35 : p

haha you brought this thread back from the dead , nobody seemed interested in the subject apparently lol

all my buddies autocross, from bone stock hondas to 400HP+ subies, and they all have a ball. Its a lot better to chalenge yourself and to get rid of that need for speed on the track instead of the streets. A lot of us have lost or know somebody who lost someone to street racing...

Im still not sure if i have the balls to take my so loved Dub to the track haha

i never saw this topic at first, and i was bored and was looking for something to talk about haha.

Autocross is crazy, the track is so undefined. i was watching videos, and those guys gotta know where to go! do they do a slow run through first or do they just go balls in and take it as it comes? my friend's dad does it with a 2006 mazda 3 sedan, that thing is crazy fast.

personally rally car racing is my favorite, i would love to do rally racing or work on rally cars, or even be a co-pilot that reads the turns haha. the track seems a bit more...defined.
