i just bought a 1988 jetta gli 16v the other day. the day i bought it the previous owner said that he just changed the oil to 20w-50. i drove it for 2 hours and then started losing gears (Reverse) and the stick/shifter would no longer spring back into the middle like its supposed to. my question is, could use of the wrong oil cause damage to the engine? and what is the correct oil for a 1988 jetta gli 16v

The shift not springing back has noting to do with the engine oil. Check you clutch.

using the wrong oil in the tranny could cause major damage shifting wise so would a tranny leak ( low tranny fluid) would also cause that problem but if it is motor oil then like jahudini said check your cluctch good luck bro
