Default Questions about catalytic conv.

My exhaust sounds like there is a hole in it, like a go kart. So i was searching for the hole, and there is none, The sound is coming from the cat. converter. Any thoughts? maybe a need a new donut gasket? Where exactly is it? where the downpipe connects to the cat? And i can smell exhaust fumes from the cat going into my vents. And is the gasket a triangle one or the dual circle one? Thanks guys

From my limited knowledge of cats, it sounds like it might be clogged. I would wait until some more experience people get on here, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised. If it is, then you have a great excuse to pull that puppy off and smash out the cat converter and create a free flowing exhaust, which will do wonders for your mpg. Unless of course you live somewhere where they do real emissions tests.

It would do shit for your mileage. In reality it would tell your computer its running lean and dump more fuel in to compensate. It would never get to that point of proper compensation so it would be full rich. And throw a CEL. If your cats plugged you would know because your car would be fine till warmed up. After your cat gets hot is when it would plug up on you. If you wanna change the gasket go to the dealer and buy the gasket it should only be a few bucks and you will get the right one. If you change the cat get a high flow cat and be done with it.

Whats your reason for wanting to get "around" the cat? Its federal law to have it. It will not do anything but negatives to your car. If you thing your gonna open up your exhaust and gain power you won't. Its been proven on dyno tests time and time again. Leave your cat alone. Its there for a reason, if its messed up replace it with OEM or an aftermarket high flow cat. Remember Al Gore will get you in your sleep if you pollute the air.
