Default Timing Belt Fun!

So... It's about that time for my Jetta. Or at least I think so. My 2.0 2000 GLS has 101,998 miles and I plan on getting my taxes back soon. I think I wanna go ahead and replace the timing belt, tensioner, and water pump now. My ocal VDub mechanic said labor would be $270 because I already have the parts. Or at least thats what I told him. I wanted to know if this was a good deal for the parts?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VW-Go...ht_3946wt_1010

Also I was reading through my manual and it lists the time to change the timing belts for the 1.9 tdi, 1.8, and vr6, but it doesnt list anything about replacing the tb on the 2.0. So do I really need to replace it now?

Thanks in advance for the help!!!

Personally I wouldnt leave something like timing belts to Ebay. sounds way too risky.

This thread has some good info in it, mostly on the first page. But 270 is basically a steal from a dealership IMO, i paid $400+ for mine done. Including parts, but i didnt take mine to a registered dealer, i was told that it usually cost around 800- 900 just for labor at most dealerships. Be sure to get the water pump with the metal impeller though

Thanks for the quick responses and links. If I order a belt and water pump on ebay, Will my local Valley Auto World Volkswagen Dealership, let me buy the tensioner from them? Or any parts at that without them installing them.

I didnt think dealerships let you bring your own parts...because then they cant give a warranty or anything.

No No,

Valley auto is a vw dealership where I want to get genuine the vw parts. The place that quoted me at $270 just works on vw's and audi's. Can I buy GGenuine vw tensioner or tb without having them installed from the dealership? Sorry about the confusion. lol

i would imagine, but they are obviously going to rob you for it, there are reputable site that you can get parts from that sell genuine VW/Audi parts. I don't know them off the top of my head, but theres links somewhere on this Forum

Dealers aren't always a bad place to get parts. You can go to any VW dealership and buy parts. If they're nice, they will even give you the normal mechanics discount. Well, at least mine does...Smithy

Well, you must have a really down to earth dealer, because the ones around here will put the bone to you anychance they get. Rediculous hourly rates and over charged parts. Im not saying there arnt good dealers out there, theres a mechanic that works around my area, and he will hook you up if you go to him.

I think I am one of the lucky ones with a nice dealership too. They were very helpful and gave me a 20% discount card!

I live in Canton, which is 1hr 20 mins south of watertown. I live in a small town, so basically its like if you screw one person over here, you will proboly go out of business because eveyone knows someone that knows someone that knows everybody elts. Get my drift, lol.
