1992 Jetta Diesel squeal from RPM guage slipping

My 1992 Jetta diesel, manual trans, has recently started a squeal noise sometimes. I believe it's coming from the clutch cable or RPM cable? When this happens, the RPM guage slows down to 1000. Then it sometimes catches again, the RPM's go back up on the guage, and the squeal goes away. If I push the clutch in the noise stops as well, as the RPM goes down when pushing in the clutch. It's getting worse and happening more often. Does the RPM guage work off a separate cable that I can just disconnect or is it connected to the clutch cable somehow. I can't find anything in the Jetta shop manual. If I could just disconnect the RPM cable and get rid of the squeal, that would be fine with me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thx, Frank
