I'm sure I'll **** some people off with this post, I just want to set the story straight because I see a lot of posts go both ways. I have a CAI on my GLI VR6, and have driven in the rain. I have checked the top of the pipe before the MAF sensor after driving in the rain and it seems dry to me. Is moisture still getting through? Should I buy the factory air box?
i will tell you i like the cai but i would prefer to go sri and even maybe set up a ram intake. i say this because on two ocassions, on my old GLI 1.8T, I drove through MASSIVE amounts of rain. It was unavoidable really. Nonetheless, my car sucked up a thirst quenching amount of water. the car cut out on me, felt like SUPER limp mode. over 2k and it just felt like it was choking. just telling you because you run the risk of hydrolocking. i also did not have the plastic undertray. that probably would have aided in avoiding this problem
Most people seem to get the impression they'll hydrolock under any kind of wet conditions and that's just not true. In order to hydrolock your filter needs to be submerged in water which is really hard to do as long as you have somen common sense. I've got a lowered car with a CAI and drove 1hr to and from a nearby city in the middle of a bad rain to pick up a buddy and i didn't hydrolock.
I also see they have a $25 bag that goes around the filter for rain or winter use.
