Thread: 1.8l noisy

    Default 1.8l noisy

I just replaced remachined head on 2003 1.8l turbo jetta, it started up fine. There is a loud knocking coming out of the valve cover while the engine is idling. I did let the engine idle to see if it would quiet down, but never did. The noise goes away above 1800 rpm. The reason for the valve job was broken timing belt. Let me know if anybody has any suggestions.

Is on the right side of the valve cover? If so its probably the cam adjuster or low oil pressure. Verify oil pressure if okay the adjuster is done for.

Would the machine shop have checked the cam adjuster when replacing valves and cleaning head? Is there an easy spot to take a pressure reading from the oil pump? No gauges for oil pressure, just idiot light.

I doubt the machine shop looked at the adjuster it is probably worn on the inside, there is a fine mesh screen that filters oil that goes into the adjuster that may have gotten plugged up at some point. Or low oil pressure at some time may have worn it. Or just worn over time. You can check oil pressure by removing the oil pressure switch on the oil filter housing and install a pressure gauge into the hole. Idle should be around 10-20 . 2500rpm about 60 psi

Thanks, I will check the oil pressure to verify and then dive into replacing cam adjuster.
