Default Replace thermostat help 2004 Jetta 1.8t

I need to replace the thermostat on my 2004 Jetta 1.8t and have read conflicting instructions….
Remove the alternator……Don’t remove the alternator.
Can the thermostat be replaced without removing the alternator and, if so, what special
instructions and / or tools are necessary?

    Thanks in advanceeveryone. Brian Bryant

I removed the alternator seemed like the less frustrating way

Thanks for your input. I have seen these videos. I have successfully removed my thermostat, thermostat housing and O-Ring without removing the alternator (as of 8/7/13). Whether or not I can install these remains to be seen. But it looks very likely I can do it without removing the alternator. If you would like detailed instructions (hints / tools, etc.), let me know and I will give them.

Hey did you end up getting everything put back together? If so can you give me some details including tools used? I found another video on a Audi forum and it looks like replacing the thermostat without removing the alternator is a much easier route.

I used a 1/4'' universal joint with a 10'' extension and i got the bolts off and on pretty easily.

just take out the alt, risking not getting the lower hose to tighten properly over the oring and thermostat is not worth it. Throttle body is i think only 3 5m hex bolts. Use a 5/8 wrench to pull back the tensioner and lock it. The tensioner is 4 5m hex to remove, and the alt is 2 13m bolts. its very simple. 15minute job that would bill 1.5 hr

Yes, I removed and replaced the thermostat on my 1.8t without removing the alternator. Fairly simple now that I reflect on it. I have about a two page narrative on what I encountered and will be happy to email it to you. I think it is too long to post on this website. Email me at bbryant44@msn.com and I will forward you a copy.
