Curious as to what everyone gets.

I drive a 12v VR6 as most of you know.. My mileage tends to fluxuate. Generally I'd say I get about 27mpg city and 32mpg highway.

Mine is all KINDS of jacked up right now. Im only getting like 18-20 on a good day...

I'm still trying to figure out whats up. Oil change was the first step, Hopefully spark plugs, wires and cap this weekend.

Clean up your MAF and your filter. You have a 2.0 don't you?? You should be getting way way better gas mileage than that!

I get 18mpg...on my vr6 12v, its driving me insane

1.8T 20V APR tuned... 34 combined city/highway, 37 pure highway.

What can I say? lol

#9 ·
it used to give me like 16....but then i changed spark plugs, oil, 02 sensors and new tires and now i get 18....what i'm thinkin is cuz i have a huge vacum leak but iono where its coming from....I can hear the hissing noise but i alrdy replaced that hose and still makes it and if i pinch it it stop..let it go then it starts hissing again

#11 ·
Use the propane torch trick to find the vac leak, then fix it! Bad mileage must be comming from somewhere. Start with that.

Yeah. I have yet to do a full tune up and I still think that one of my calipers MIGHT be hanging up, but I haven't managed to get under it and check yet.

@Vixen: My filter is a practically brand new K&N, maybe 300 Miles on it. I haven't checked my MAF so I should prolly do that next. Also, yes, it is a 2.0

Umm if your talking about gas mileage, all I'm gonna say is that I have a modded 1.8T and get 34mpg combined city/highway, and 37mpg pure highway. Definitly somethin wrong there unless all your travels are in stop and go city traffic!

Still seems low... Scan for codes, make sure nothing comes up like P1296 or w/e for coolant system.

Check plug condition and gap, air filter, tire pressure, etc.

#18 ·
26 on the last tank, but i was having coolant system problems. hopefully after 2 t-stats, and 2 temp sensors, i have it fixed. talk about a pain.

#19 ·
lol yeah dude I've gotten a bad CTS from the factory before... Shitty...

But I'm willing to bet you'll get some mileage back once you fix the cooling system problem... Your CTS is probly telling your ECU that the car isn't fully warmed up yet, so it compensates by injecting more fuel to warm it up... Therefore you're gettin poor mileage.

Anyways good luck man!

I get 170 for half a tank

#24 ·
Ahh I see we're going by tank #'s now.

And the magic number IISSSSsss... 450 miles lol

Ok guys, I'm running out of ideas on this whole Gas Mileage thing; I continue to get barely over 18 and I have currently:

1. Changed out the air filter.

2. Full Oil change (Yes I know this doesn't really apply but still listing it.)

3. Cleaned the MAF sensor.

4. Checked the tire pressure.

5. I took my car in to my local shop today to have them checkout a weird rubbing noise I had been hearing; figured it was a caliper hanging up and thats not it, so rubbing caliper is out.

The next step recommended to me by my shop is to do this full fuel injector system cleanout or something of that nature. He say's it is suppose to completely clean and flush out all the crap out of my fuel system. Does this sound like a solid option? I only ask because they want like $100 to do it.

Any other ideas on this problem?

ALSO...No one seems to be able to connect to my car. I have a CEL on, guy I bought it from told me it was a camshaft positioning sensor, but I wanted to make sure before I did anything about it. I have taken it to 3 Advance Auto Parts, 2 Autozones and now Mr. Tire who don't even have a code reader, they actually hook it up to a PC and NO ONE can get a reading...it just errors out and says it cant connect.[wtf]

Any advice would be awesome guys.

Hmm... I forgot what car you have, forgive me, but if its boosted then definitly clean the MAP sensor. Also, the throttle body...

Fuel filter can be another option, but a complete fuel system clean would be a good idea. I wouldn't go to the shop though if I were you, especially for that price. Buy some Sea Foam (just the name, not actually foam from the sea lol) and that'll clean EVERYTHING out. Injectors, fuel lines, etc. You will have to change your oil after this though, but I've seen amazing results using this stuff.

As for not being able to connect... Thats pretty strange. Unplug your battery AT the autozone parking lot for 5 mins. Plug back in, and immediately read your ECU. If that doesnt work I dunno what else to tell ya.

Hope this helps a bit

I have a 1999 MKIV 2.0 Jetta.

I thought about the fuel filter as well, and am most likely going to change that out when I do a tune-up here in the next few weeks. (Hopefully this coming weekend weather permitting)

I can't do the fuel system cleaning like that, as I JUST changed my oil, I mean I've got like...400 miles on it MAX and I am not dumping another $50 in oil change materials.

I might have to give that battery thing a shot. My neighbor across the street has a reader, maybe I'll see if he will let me borrow it.

What about an O2 sensor Boost? Would that be a possibility?

#28 ·
Hmm well.... I don't THINK it could be a problem, but you never know. Its worth cleaning them seeing as how they're a 1 volt circuit meaning they're VERY sensitive.

Also, have you checked plugs and gap?

Do you buy discount gas?

#29 ·
I haven't gotten around to checking the plugs, but I mean...unless my plugs are like...GONE they shouldn't be impacting my mileage that much should they?

And yes, I do not buy like 93 Octane or anything, I cant afford that sh*t. I just use the normal, 87-89 Octane but its from like BP and Thorntons not crap gas places.

#30 ·
Well thats ok cause naturally aspirated cars don't benefit from higher octane gas anyway... You can actually do damage if you run it long enough.

But yea... never heard of thortons but ill take your word for it lol

#34 ·
LOL when I was in Ohio they had all BP's and Speedways... It was a loose loose situation. But there was ONE shell station about 10 miles out of town and i always wen't out of my way to buy from them lol

And hey wrong thread but i hope your tranny thing works out..... Thats gotta suck.

Hit me up if you need torque specs for installation or anything arite?
